Charles Wesley, sometimes called the "sweet singer" of Methodism, is one of Christendom's most outstanding poets. He wrote some 9,000 hymns and sacred poems, hundreds of which became hymns for Christian worship. George Friedrich Handel wrote music specifically for three of them. This DVD is a one-man musical drama that deals with Wesley's struggle against poverty, reluctant acceptance of Holy Orders and life as a Church of England clergyman, adventure to America, opposition to slavery, social and spiritual reform, personal transformation, stormy beginnings of the Methodist movement, courage in the face of violence, family devotion and conflict, and poetic genius. Episode 1:Peter-Disciple: Simon Peter, a fisherman, was one of many who heard John the Baptist preach that a messiah was to come. When Jesus called him from his nets, he willingly became his disciple.
Episode 2:Peter-Witness: Following Jesus's death and resurrection, and the day of Pentecost, Peter became one of the strongest witnesses for the "Way". With John he healed a lame man at the temple gate, and in Joppa he learned that the Gospel was for all people, Jew and Gentile.
Episode 3: Peter- Missionary: Like Paul, Peter became a missionary for the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire. He too was imprisoned and had to deal with opposition from within the Jewish faith. Like Paul, he came to Rome where he as crucified during Nero's persecution of the Christians.
Episode 4: Stephen- Martyr: Stephen, a leader in the young church, got into trouble with some of the Jews, who accused him of blaspheming against God. His address before the synagogue council inflamed them and they stoned him to death, the first martyr for the young church.
